How to Recognize Signs From a Deceased Loved One

Before we get into how you recognize signs from your loved ones that have passed on, let’s address the elephant in the room. We know it might be hard to believe that anyone can communicate with the dead, but Theresa clearly can.

She says she is the first one to admit that what she does sounds crazy, because how can someone communicate with a person that has passed away? We may never understand it, but she can. And watching her in action makes it abundantly clear she is talking to souls on the other side. To see it for yourself, watch the full Interview where Theresa connects with multiple loved ones that have moved on. Not just Michael and Lauryn’s loved ones, other people in the room that she knew nothing about. Watch the full conversation here.

Who Is Theresa Caputo, the Long Island Medium?

Theresa Caputo is the Long Island Medium, known from her television show, her live shows, podcast, and her books. She built a brand and a following around connecting with the dead.

Theresa says the messages she delivers are of faith, hope, and peace. She doesn’t call herself a fortune teller or a fixer. She’s clear that her work isn’t going to take away the pain, the sorrow, or the grief, but she hopes it can make someone’s life a little bit easier and their grief a little bit lighter.

How to Recognize Signs From a Deceased Loved One

So how do you actually notice a sign? According to Theresa, signs and symbols can be subtle. It isn’t going to be something dramatic. So don’t worry, there is no shadowy figure going to randomly appear, standing behind you in your bathroom mirror.

You just need to pay attention. We’re busy, we’re distracted, and we are logical beings that can easily talk ourselves out of what we sense. So below are the signs to look out for that Theresa described on the episode:

Animals and Birds

Theresa points to animals as some of the most sensitive receivers of spirit. She says a dog barking at the end of a stairway is her symbol for the dog sensing souls in the home, and if a dog jumps on a couch, it can mean the soul of a loved one is sitting there and the animal is drawn to it.

Birds come up too. Lauryn says that their kids regularly notice the same orange bird everywhere. Theresa explains that it’s not that the loved one is the bird, it’s that when we notice these signs and symbols, it’s the soul getting our attention to notice something, reminding us they’re with us.

Songs and Music

A song on the radio at just the right moment isn’t always random. A song that keeps finding you can be a quiet hello from someone you love that has moved on. Especially if there was a song you two shared a memory over.

Repeating Numbers and Signs

If you keep glancing at the clock and catching the same numbers, it could be a loved one saying hi. Theresa says sometimes it’s about time, like when we look at time and it reminds us of someone. Or it could be as simple as simple as the soul trying to get our attention, encouraging us to notice the same numbers. The pattern itself is the point. It’s a nudge to remember.

Dreams and Visitations

Not every dream is just your mind processing. Theresa draws a line between a nightmare and a true visitation. She says if you see your loved one perfectly healthy, and it’s vivid and feels real, that’s a visitation from the soul saying “remember me this way.”

She shared this during a striking moment in the interview, telling one of the producers that their late father and brother had appeared together in a dream. She said that was a visitation from their souls, showing they were together and that their souls are safe and at peace.

A vivid, peaceful dream, in her view, is one of the clearest signs your loved one is visiting you.

Physical Sensations

This one is for those that are extra sensitive. Theresa mentions that she can often feel physical sensations in her own body. So if you’re ever feeling like someone is in the room with you, you feel a physical presence in your body that you can’t put your finger on, it could be your loved one’s soul in your presence.

Why We Miss the Signs From Loved Ones That Have Passed Away

If the signs are always there, why do so many of us miss them? Theresa’s answer is simple. Grown-up brains are too busy.

She says children can see things adults cannot because their minds aren’t busy. Adults question what they see and make up excuses, like being tired or having too much wine. Kids and animals just accept it, without judgement or doubt. So they pick up on what we filter out.

Her advice for the rest of us is to get out of our own way. Theresa says to just be open, and know that anything going on around you that reminds you of your loved one IS them. You’re not crazy. Some people find it easier in quiet moments. Think meditation, prayer, sitting in stillness, going for a walk in nature, whatever it may be that allows you to slow down and be present.

Theresa's Message on Grief and Finding Peace

Theresa’s Message on Grief and Finding Peace

She says grief is never going away, ever. No matter how many readings she does, people will always grieve their loved ones that they can’t spend time with, hug, and make new memories with. But these tools can make the grief lighter and make tomorrow without them a little bit easier.

Finally, Theresa emphasizes that grief doesn’t have to be heavy, and you can even find beauty in it

And even more important, she specifically emphasizes that how someone passed away should never stop you from celebrating them. No matter how a loved one left the physical world, you have a right to celebrate and honor them every day of your life, to remember the happy times, say their name, and talk about them.

Where to Find Theresa Caputo

If this conversation resonated, there’s plenty more of Theresa to explore. She focuses her work on a few specific places.

Theresa’s business is centered on her book Good Mourning, jewelry line, live shows, and her television show. But she also does live readings which she does not charge for! Which is good to know because there’s a lot of fraud out there, so if anyone reaches out claiming to be Theresa offering paid readings, that’s not her.

Her live show is the experience she’s definitely most proud of. She says people can be guaranteed an experience filled with faith, hope, and peace, and that they will leave that show feeling different.
